Th Great Baltimore fire begins

On this day in 1904, a small fire in downtown Baltimore, Maryland turned into a huge uncontrollable blaze that destroyed over 1500 buildings and did over $100 million in damage. Over 1200 firefighters were at the scene, fighting the blaze. Nobody died in the fire, and no homes were destroyed. The blaze burned for 31 hours. It started on February 7th and ended on February 8th. Baltimore's beautiful domed City Hall did not burn! It was built in 1867.

It is believed that a discarded cigarette in the basement of the Hurst building was responsible for the fire.
